When Even Dealer-Level Diagnostics Needs the OEM

Diagnostics is much more than identifying fault codes. Today’s trucks and equipment require calibrations, parameter changes, forced regenerations, injector coding, actuator tests, and many other bidirectional functions. As diagnostic capabilities have expanded, independent shops and fleets can now complete work that once depended heavily on dealerships just by using advanced-level all makes diagnostic tools or OEM software available to the public.

Occasionally, however, the next step falls outside the control of any third-party diagnostic tool. Certain software updates, programming procedures, and protected parameter changes remain exclusive to the manufacturer and require direct access to OEM systems.

According to the Jaltest Advanced Technical Support (ATS) team, this is how most Central Services cases begin. Customers typically contact the team after diagnosing the vehicle and determining that the repair requires an OEM-controlled procedure. The need may be identified through troubleshooting, a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB), or a calibration revision check. At that point, the challenge is: how to I get that done?

Jaltest Central Services (JCS) provides access to experienced specialists who remotely perform these manufacturer-authorized procedures using OEM software. This eliminates the need for shops and fleets to purchase, maintain, and learn multiple OEM platforms they may only use occasionally.

JCS currently supports procedures including Cummins ECM calibration updates, PACCAR parameter modifications, International Body Controller calibration updates, and Detroit Diesel ECU software updates. Each has the same objective: helping technicians complete repairs that would otherwise require dealership involvement or dedicated OEM software.

The process is straightforward. Before the session, the ATS team verifies the Central Services ticket, required cables, battery voltage support, and internet connection. The technician then switches Jaltest Diagnostics to Advanced Mode and establishes a secure connection. The specialist performs the procedure through the manufacturer’s software, verifies successful completion, checks for fault codes, and provides a work order documenting the service.

What Technicians Ask Most Often

One common question is why these procedures cannot simply be performed through Jaltest. While Jaltest supports thousands of dealer-level diagnostic and maintenance functions, some manufacturers require specific programming operations to be performed exclusively through their own servers. In these cases, authorized OEM access is required and there are not all makes tools capable of doing as part of their dealer-level coverage.
